Tdap Boosters for 7th Grade Students

Effective January 16, 2013, Iowa law requires that all students entering the 7th grade receive a one-time booster of the Tdap (tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis) vaccine.

The Tdap vaccine is a combination vaccine that protects against pertussis, as well as tetanus and diphtheria.

Pertussis (whooping cough) is a very contagious disease that causes violent coughing fits making it difficult to breathe.  In  2012, there were 1,647 cases of pertussis reported to the Iowa Dept of Public Health, which is an increase of 417%.

Tetanus, also known as “lock jaw”, causes painful muscle spasms all over the body including tightening of the jaw so the person cannot open their mouth or swallow.

Diphtheria can cause a thick covering in the back of the throat leading to breathing problems, paralysis or heart failure.

Although this requirement is only for students entering 7th grade, if you have older children who have not had the Tdap booster, please check with your health care provider for recommendations on this or other immunizations.

Your child can get this vaccination anytime between now and the start of the 2014-2015 school year in August.  After your child is vaccinated with a booster dose of Tdap, please have your Dr. or primary care provider send documentation to me at the SWV Middle School by fax at (712) 826-4072, or email ddalton@villiscaschools.org

If you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact me at (712) 826-2552 ext 111 or at the above email address.

Thanks,
