What is Junior Kindergarten?

Corning Elementary Schools Junior Kindergarten (JK) program is a full day program offered to kindergarten aged students (turned 5 by September 15th) who may be developmentally young and in need of an additional year to grow in order to be successful upon entering a rigorous full day kindergarten program. JK is a bridge between preschool and kindergarten for those students who need to absorb and express ideas, learn more about friendship, assert their independence, and examine the world around them. In JK, learning is driven by the needs of the class. The pace of study is set by the specific strengths and readiness of the students. Small class size allows for more personal attention and interventions to meet the specific needs of the students. While in JK, your student will become familiar with the structure and format of a day in kindergarten while developing critical skills necessary for elementary school. JK allows students to grow and develop socially, emotionally, physically, and intellectually.

   - Social Skills: cooperation, friendship, decision-making, self-confidence, listening and problem     solving skills, and sustaining attention.

   - Emotional Well-Being: positive attitude, self-responsibility, self-help skills, and respect for self and     others.

   - Physical Skills: fine and gross motor skills; confidence in physical capabilities, use of all senses for     total learning, and controlling impulses.

-Intellectual skills: independent thinking, memory, problem-solving skills, language and literacy skills,     organizing work, understanding of the world, and following multi-step instructions.

Students who enter JK are given a head start that will yield huge payoffs in their future academic success. JK provides a gift of time which will help students build a strong foundation for success in elementary school. JK is a win for children, families, and schools as children are better prepared for success. Families have additional options to ensure their children enter kindergarten with the maturity, confidence, and skills they need to be successful.
